The partnership between HKSH Medical Group (HKSH) and The University of Hong Kong (HKU) began over half a century ago when Dr. LI Shu Fan, the founding father and former Medical Superintendent of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, donated a parcel of land in Pokfulam to his alma mater in 1961 as a token to facilitate its expansion in medical education. Apart from offering scholarships and bursaries to medical students, HKSH has also been conducting training programmes for more than 3,300 HKU medical students and postgraduate specialty training in surgery, family medicine, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and plastic & reconstructive surgery. In 2014, the HKU Clinical Academic Unit (CAU) was established at Li Shu Pui Block of Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital as a facility dedicated to research and specialist training.
HKSH and HKU signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in November 2022 as a new milestone of their long-standing partnership in the areas of teaching, patient care and academic research in Hong Kong. Under the MoU, the Clinical Affiliation Scheme will be launched in April 2023 with the aim of attracting medical and nursing practitioners to pursue further and higher training and sub-specialty training in priority areas of strategic importance for the health and healthcare sectors of Hong Kong. The Scheme will also provide a collaborative framework to facilitate talent exchange, knowledge transfer and resources sharing in a systematic and sustainable approach, ultimately achieving synergy between the two institutions in the areas of clinical services, teaching and research.
As an affiliate teaching hospital of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), HKSH works closely with HKUMed to bolster medical education and research. This Scheme will allow HKUMed professors and medical professionals to gain exposure to a wider variety of clinical settings in a private hospital through their participation in clinical services, thereby enhancing their professional skills and research capabilities. Moreover, the Scheme will also provide more clinical teachers for HKUMed, young scholars of HKUMed can interact with the veteran doctors of HKSH for a broader scope of clinical training with state-of-the-art medical facilities at HKSH.

HKSH and HKU have had a long and fruitful partnership in training and nurturing medical and nursing talents. With the jointly established Clinical Affiliation Scheme (the Scheme), we open a new door for attracting and pooling talents. The Scheme can also create a collaborative platform for public-private-academic sectors to equip the next generation of healthcare professionals with practical skills for different clinical situations.
Since as early as 1960s, HKUMed has always been the primary beneficiary of Dr. LI Shu Fan and The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation (the Foundation). These include the donation of a piece of land by Dr. LI, on which the Li Shu Fan Building was built for medical teaching, as well as the establishment of several Endowed Professorships, Dean’s Fund, fellowships and training sponsorships from the Foundation. Dedicated programmes have also been put in place for teaching and research in the form of training of medical students, specialist training and professorial clinics.
The new Clinical Affiliation Scheme allows HKU’s medical scholars to gain clinical experience in the private sector and take advantage of the advanced facilities and technologies at HKSH for teaching, medical research and treating patients. It can also broaden their exposure through interaction with HKSH staff and patients in clinical services. Through The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation and The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation, HKSH will continue to sponsor HKUMed professors / medical professionals to participate in overseas studies or exchanges, so that they can bring in more new medical technologies and research achievements to Hong Kong.
As an Affiliate Teaching Hospital of HKUMed, HKSH will continue to widen and deepen cooperation between the two institutions. We will continue to work closely with HKUMed to inject new blood into the medical talent pool in Hong Kong and the region to meet the long-term medical needs.

It is with excitement and gratitude that HKUMed welcomes HKSH as one of its Affiliate Teaching Hospitals. In fact, the collaboration between us has been evolving with the same common purpose throughout the past decades – to provide an optimal and value-added platform for medical teaching, clinical research and patient care.
Taking advantage of the comprehensive service spectrum in HKSH Medical Group and its members, including Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, HKSH Healthcare and HKSH Eastern Medical Centre, the two institutions aim to provide HKUMed colleagues with more opportunities to broaden clinical experience in the private sector through the Clinical Affiliation Scheme (CAS). Our colleagues can participate in clinical research with full support of advanced technologies and unique equipment at HKSH, including the only Clinical Trials Centre in the local private sector, which is accredited by the National Medical Products Association (NMPA). Our colleagues will also have access to clinical fellowships and the funding schemes from The Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation and The Li Shu Pui Medical Foundation for their research projects.
Addressing the rapid changes in medical field and the increasing demand for healthcare services require purposeful and effective collaborations in a multi-pronged approach. While coalescing research and clinical needs, the HKSH-HKU partnership will continue to advance and deepen in its common pursuit of innovation in clinical care, teaching and research across the public and private sectors. And we will stay committed to nurturing compassionate talents and building a time-tested healthcare system for the benefit of public health.
