Coronary Angiography and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)

Coronary Angiography

A coronary angiogram is among the numerous procedures we offer, in which images of coronary arteries are captured under fluoroscopy. Under local anaesthesia, a catheter is carefully advanced into the coronary arteries through a small puncture in either the wrist (trans-radial) or groin (trans-femoral) areas. By injecting contrast media through the catheter and capturing images of coronary arteries, doctors can observe the blood flow and identify any blockages or stenosis due to plaque deposition.

Intervention

If necessary, the narrowed coronary arteries can be expanded using coronary balloons and stents. Other equipment such as Intravascular Ultrasound, Optical Coherence Tomography, Fractional Flow Reserve Study, thrombectomy devices, Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy, and Rotablation may also be employed to assess and treat blocked arteries with higher precision.

The trans radial approach (currently the standard of care) provides extra advantages such as early mobilisation and discharge. A drug eluting stent (DES) is used to reduce the incidence of re-narrowing in the future, now the gold standard for treating virtually all lesions. In general, the complication rate of contemporary interventional procedures is around 2–4%. The risk of death is far below 1%.
