What is Endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a safe and well-tolerated procedure to look inside an organ. It involves putting a patient under local anaesthesia, sedation or monitored anaesthesia, and using an instrument called an endoscope – a long and flexible tube with a tiny video camera and light source at the end. The endoscope is passed through a natural orifice of the body (such as the nose, mouth or anus) to reach the organ to be examined. Through the endoscope’s connection to a TV monitor, the doctor can see the GI tract clearly and take tissue samples for biopsies, or perform therapeutic procedures at the same time, with great precision.
