Common Hepatology, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Problems

We diagnose and help patients manage common hepatology, hepatobiliary and pancreatic problems.

Chronic Hepatitis

Viral hepatitis is characterised by inflammation of the liver by filterable agents. The five common types are hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. While mostly asymptomatic, hepatitis can be managed or even cured with medication if the virus antigen or antibody can be detected by blood tests at an early stage. Delayed treatment may cause liver fibrosis, which could deteriorate into cirrhosis, even liver cancer. For more information, please click here.

FibroScan®

To diagnose fatty liver and alcohol-related problems, we use a FibroScan ultrasound device — a quick, painless, risk-free and non-invasive alternative to traditional liver biopsies.

Stomach, Colon and Liver Cancers

The human gut harbours approximately 20% of all cancers. In Hong Kong, cancers of the gastrointestinal tract account for half of the ten major causes of cancer deaths in recent years. Colon, liver and stomach cancers rank second, third and fourth respectively.

Colorectal Cancer:

Early screening and removal of colonic polyps makes it possible to prevent most cases of colorectal cancer and is cost-effective. It has been recommended that all subjects above the age of 50 and at normal risk should be screened. Screening colonoscopy has been advocated as the choice of screening. Recent studies have demonstrated a strong association between colorectal cancer and coronary artery disease, making colonoscopy the preferred choice for colorectal cancer screening in this sub-group.

Gastric Cancer:

50-60% of the Hong Kong population is infected by Helicobacter Pylori. There is strong evidence that eradication of Helicobacter pylori can prevent gastric cancer.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma:

10% of the Hong Kong population are hepatitis B virus carriers, to which most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma in Hong Kong are related. A half-yearly regular check-up is necessary for assessment of the Hepatitis B virus and the appropriate use of anti-viral therapy for these patients if indicated.
