Our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital was first established in 1978 and is among one of the first few private hospital-based units dedicated to the provision of intensive care in Hong Kong. Today, we provide an extensive array of critical care services, supported by advanced medical technology and a team of highly skilled ICU specialists. Our nursing and medical staff collaborate diligently with attending physicians to facilitate prompt recovery for our patients.

Our services and technologies include:

24/7 Bedside Monitoring: Our monitoring system tracks vital parameters in real time, including ECG, Haemodynamics, Oximetry, EtCO2, and EEG activity. Integrated with the central nursing station, this system ensures seamless analysis of patient data to optimise treatment outcomes.
Respiratory Support: We provide both invasive and non-invasive ventilation support for patients experiencing respiratory failure.
Renal Care: Advanced therapies such as Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and Hemodialysis (HD) are available for patients with kidney failure.
Adsorption Therapy: This innovative procedure removes harmful substances like carbon dioxide, enterotoxins, cytokines, and metabolites from patients’ systems.
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): A life-saving intervention for patients with critical heart and lung conditions.
Post-Surgical Care: Dedicated monitoring and care for patients recovering from Open-Heart surgery or other major surgical procedures.
Personalised Nursing: Each ICU patient is assigned a named nurse to ensure individualised, high-quality critical care.
Telemetry Services: Continuous ECG monitoring is available for patients across all wards, ensuring comprehensive cardiac surveillance.

Guidelines for Visitors

Our foremost objective is to deliver optimal care to our patients. In order to foster an environment conducive to healing, we have established the following visitor guidelines:

Visitor Limitations

To maintain patient comfort and privacy, a maximum of two visitors will be permitted at any one time. We encourage family members to rotate visits to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to spend time with the patient.

Age Requirements

Visitors must be 12 years of age or older. Children under the age of 12 are required to remain in the waiting area and must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Behaviour and Conduct

Visitors may be asked to exit the unit at any time to allow healthcare professionals to provide necessary medical care.
Photography, as well as visual and audio recording, is strictly prohibited in our ICU.
Eating and drinking are not allowed within the unit.
Visitors must refrain from touching any medical equipment or intravenous lines connected to patients, as well as any surgical wounds or drainage.
To maintain a calm and peaceful atmosphere, please speak softly and avoid any disruptive behaviors that may disturb other patients.
It is essential to respect the privacy and confidentiality of all patients and their families.

Communication with Healthcare Team

Please designate a family spokesperson to communicate with our healthcare team for update to streamline communication. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the assigned nursing staff or physician.

Infection Control Protocols

To prevent the spread of infection, flowers and fruits are not permitted in the ICU.
To minimise the risk of infection transmission, all visitors are recommended to wear a mask upon entering the unit.
Visitors should also don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as indicated by the patient’s infectious status, before entering patient’s room.
Visitors with any signs of illness (fever, cough, etc.) are encouraged to refrain from visiting to protect our patients.

Monday to Sunday:

9:00 am - 1:00 pm
5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Accommodation

Our unit consists of: 1 Suite, 2 Private Rooms and 9 Semi-Private Rooms

With a total of 12 beds, each room is equipped with specialised medical beds, advanced monitoring systems, ventilators, and other essential equipment to support patient care.

Semi-Private Single Room

Equipped with a telephone and a touchscreen IE Buddy, providing access to the internet, hospital information, and TV entertainment.
A shared common sitting area is available for visitors of semi-private room patients. Operating hours: 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM.

Private Room

Features a television, telephone, and a mini refrigerator for your convenience.
Includes a private lavatory for added comfort.
Includes a seating area with a television and a sofa bed, allowing a family member to stay overnight.

Suite

Spacious and well-lit, offering large windows with a stunning view of the racecourse.
Includes a separate dining area with a sofa, television, and refrigerator for family members.
Features a private lavatory and shower room for added comfort.
An additional bed can be arranged for a family member to stay overnight.
