Routine Foetal Morphology Scan (18-22 weeks of gestation)

Routine Foetal Morphology Scan (18-22 weeks of gestation)

A foetal morphology scan provides a comprehensive assessment of the baby's structure. While most scans reveal normal development, reassuring parents, they can also detect structural defects. Early identification of abnormalities allows for prenatal diagnosis, parents, obstetrician and paediatricians might be better prepared for the child's birth and, in cases of severe congenital defects, the option of pregnancy termination.

While not all congenital defects can be picked up by a routine morphology scan, it can detect around 70–80% of major congenital defects. The pick-up rate depends on a number of factors, including the severity and nature of the abnormality, the position of the foetus, maternal factors such as abdominal thickness or the presence of surgical scars, and the quality of the ultrasound machine. Also critical is whether the medical personnel have the experience or training in morphology scans.

Diagnostic ultrasound has been used since the 1960s. Based on numerous follow-up studies on children who were scanned before birth, there is no evidence that in-utero exposure of antenatal ultrasound is associated with any undesirable biological effects.
