- The first in Hong Kong to introduce WaveLight Plus technology, creating personalized 3D eye models to plan highly customized LASIK surgeries.
- The first in Hong Kong to utilize the OcuLign cyclotorsion compensation navigation system for performing SMILE-Pro surgeries.
- Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre and Eye Surgery Centre are jointly awarded the Reader Digest’s Trusted Brand Award (Eye Surgery Centre Category).
- Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre was the first centre in Asia and the third in the world to adopt the SMILE-Pro technology
- Opening of Eye Surgery Centre at One Pacific Place, Admiralty
- Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE), a new type of laser refractive surgery, is introduced.
- Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre moves to One Pacific Place, Admiralty.
- Eye Centre (Central Clinic) moves to One Pacific Place, Admiralty.
- First Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) cornea transplant performed in Hong Kong.
- First Boston Keratoprosthesis artificial cornea transplant performed at a private Hong Kong hospital.
- Femtosecond laser cataract surgery introduced.
- Department of Ophthalmology moves to 4/F, Li Shu Fan Block.
- Eye Surgery Centre opens on 6/F, Central Block.
- Eye Centre (Central Clinic) moves to 3/F, Chuang’s Tower.
- Eye Centre (Central Clinic) opens on 2/F, Chuang’s Tower, Central.
- Introduction of femtosecond laser LASIK.
- Cataract Surgery Centre opens on 5/F, Central Block in January, with Dr Ivan CHEN as Director. Service closes during the SARS epidemic but resumes in March 2007.
- Guy Hugh Chan Medical Education Foundation established. Clinical attachments sponsored for 17 doctors at the Department, over a duration ranging from 3 months to 1 year.
- RSC moves to 5/F, Li Shu Pui Block and renamed the Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre in memory of Prof. Guy CHAN, who passed away in April. Dr John CHANG is appointed as Director in May.
Introduction of Higher Training in Ophthalmology programme.
- Training of HKU medical undergraduates begins
- Service commences on 5/F, Central Block.
- First LASIK course at the CRS (International Education Group for Refractive Surgery) is approved by Refractive Surgery Centre in April, and Prof. Guy Hugh CHAN becomes the only certified LASIK trainer in Hong Kong. Twenty one surgeons are trained in the first year.
- Over 100 doctors have received LASIK training at the Guy Hugh Chan Refractive Surgery Centre, including doctors from Macau, Mainland China, Thailand, the Philippines and United States. Training in ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) surgery is later provided.

- Opening of Hong Kong’s first Refractive Surgery Centre (RSC) on 5/F, Central Block, with Prof. Guy Hugh CHAN as Director.
- LASIK surgeries have since been performed on over 120,000 eyes.
- HKSH co-hosts the International Symposium on Modern Challenges of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, with CUHK and Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA in Hong Kong.
- Department moves to 8/F, Li Shu Pui Block
- Introduction of Phacoemulsification for Cataracts.
- Dr Walton LI is among the first surgeons in Hong Kong to perform cataract surgery with microscope and ultrasound.
- Department of Ophthalmology is established on 2/F, Central Block, with Dr. Walton LI as the Head.
- Cataract extractions account for over 70% of ophthalmological operations at HKSH (1980).
- HKSH’s first corneal transplant is performed (1981).
