Toenail Conditions

Ingrown Toenail

  • An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows directly into the surrounding skin, causing intense pain, redness, swelling, and a high risk of infection. This common issue can stem from improper trimming habits, genetic nail shapes, or tight footwear pressing against the toe.
  • Our Treatment Approach: Podiatrists manage this by carefully resecting the offending nail spike using sterile, specialised podiatric instruments, often providing immediate pain relief. This is paired with proper nail-cutting education, packing, taping techniques, or toenail bracing to guide correct future nail growth.

Fungal Infection of Toenail (Onychomycosis)

  • Fungal nail infections, or onychomycosis, can cause toenails to become thick, discoloured, and uncomfortable. Because the nail plate acts as a hard protective barrier, standard over-the-counter treatments often fail to reach the fungus living underneath.
  • Our Treatment Approach: Podiatric care tackles this problem through a multi-step, clinical approach designed to relieve discomfort and clear the infection effectively:
    1. Mechanical Debridement: The podiatrist uses a specialised medical drill to carefully thin out and reduce the thickened, infected nail plate.
    2. Targeted Topical Medications: Once the nail is thinned, the podiatrist will recommend or prescribe targeted topical antifungal solutions that can penetrate the nail plate far more effectively.
    3. Advanced Laser Therapy: For advanced or stubborn infections, podiatrists utilise specialised laser devices, including 1064nm Laser (a thermal laser) and Cold Laser (a non-thermal laser device) using specific wavelengths of light to destroy fungal cells without damaging surrounding tissue and eradicate fungus.
    4. Hygiene Education & Prevention: To prevent reinfection, podiatrists provide comprehensive education on foot hygiene.

Toenail Deformity

  • Toenail deformities can cause nails to grow abnormally thick, curved, or severely misshapen, often resulting from past physical trauma, genetic traits, or underlying health conditions. Beyond aesthetic concerns, these structural abnormalities frequently press into the surrounding skin, leading to chronic pain, irritation, and an increased vulnerability to infections.
  • Our Treatment Approach: Our specialised podiatric care focuses on non-invasive, pain-free methods to guide natural tissue recovery and restore healthy function. In most cases, surgery or injections is not needed. A prime example is the use of a corrective toenail braces system. This active bracing mechanism gently lifts the curved or ingrown edges away from the surrounding skin, providing pressure relief and retraining the pathway of new nail growth to restore both function and comfort.
