Although ESWL is considered a safe and effective option for treating stones, there are still factors affecting posing impact on effectiveness. Certain health conditions can also increase the risk of complication from ESWL. 

The success rate of ESWL depends on:
 

• Size of stone
• Location of stone
• Type of stone
• Body type
   

Lithotripsy must not be performed during pregnancy

Under some medical conditions, ESWL is less effective or the risk on the patient is higher:

• Cardiac pacemaker or metallic implants
• Obesity
• Chronic kidney infection
• Bleeding disorders
• Hypertension
• Nephropathy
   

Before the procedure, you may be given an analgesic, sedative or anaesthesia medication. 

You will lie on your back or on your stomach on the lithotripter table, on top of a water-filled cushion. X-ray fluoroscopy or ultrasound will be used to locate the stone. Shockwave pulses will then be delivered into your body. The lithotripsy team will keep adjusting the target and energy level to optimise treatment outcome. You may hear a popping sound or feel a tapping sensation. 

The procedure usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the size and location of the stone.

Scheduling an appointment for the first treatment session is usually through the referring doctor. Generally, patients can get an appointment within a few days. If required, patients will receive a reminder card after the first treatment session stating the date and time of any follow-up sessions.
