Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique using a strong magnetic field, radio waves and a computer system to create detailed cross-sectional images of internal organ of your body. It uses non-ionizing radiation and is a painless medical procedure to examine your body.

The MRI machine is a large, cylindrical (tube-shaped) machine that creates a strong magnetic field to align the atoms in our body in the same direction. By using a combination of magnetic fields and radio waves, the atoms will send back signals which are received by the computer system and converted into an image of the part of the body being examined.

In most cases there is no special preparation required for an MRI examination, which means you can eat and drink normally (no fasting). Except for a few cardiac, abdominal or pelvic examinations which potentially require additional preparations, all of which will be explained at time of booking. You will be asked whether there are any cardiac devices or metallic implants inside your body, and if needed, to change into a gown. Jewellery and metallic accessories (e.g. hearing aids, subcutaneous glucose monitor devices that are not MR safe). You are advised to leave your valuables at home to avoid concerns about them during the examination.

Each MRI scan is different. The MRI team will explain the procedure to you prior to starting your scan. In most instances, you should keep still and relax throughout the examination. Warm blanket will be provided to to ensure your comfort. During the examination, you can call our staff for help using a call bell . You will not feel anything or any discomfort but hear a constant drumming noise. Earplugs or headphones will be provided to block out the noise. MRI contrast is needed when necessary. If required, the injection is usually administered via a small cannula into a vein in your arm or hand. Normally, an MRI scan will take from 20 minutes to 1 hour and even longer depending on the body parts scanned.

Please note that some examinations use different MR scanners in different rooms. This means that while you are waiting, it might look like some other patients are going ahead of you, but this is not the case. In addition, priority is given to emergency cases, and the schedule may not be able to be kept strictly.

If you have not been sedated, no special type of care is required after an MRI scan. You may resume your usual diet and activities unless your doctor advises you differently.

An MRI scan with contrast only occurs when your doctor orders one. Most MRI contrast contains an element called gadolinium, which is a rare earth material. Gadolinium based contrast agents have been used safely in millions of cases for several decades. Mild side effects can occur, but severe reactions are very rare. After completion of your examination, your body will eliminate the contrast agent through your urine. Our MRI team will explain the potential side effects of contrast injection before the start of the scan.

In most cases, an MRI exam is safe for people with metal prostheses, except for a few types. Please inform our MRI team if you have any implanted material including cardiac devices, neurostimulator, electronic pump, cochlear implants, blood vessel devices, implanted electrodes or any metallic fragments in your body at the time of making an appointment.

If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, please also inform us so that we can discuss this with your referring doctor prior to your scan.

Our Equipment

Our facility is equipped with four 70cm wide-bore MRI scanners. The expanded diameter offers increased headroom and spatial comfort, making the scanning process vastly more comfortable, especially for individuals prone to claustrophobia. We provide comprehensive diagnostic imaging across nearly all major body structures and internal organs, covering the brain, neck, spinal cord, heart, breast, thorax, abdominal and pelvic organs, bones and joints and major blood vessels.

Services

Our department was certified as a Centre of Excellence in Prostate MRI by Radboud University Medical Centre in 2019. The Radboud Prostate MRI reference centre is a world-renowned MR Prostate Imaging centre, whose research led to the implantation of PI-RAD which became the world standard for prostate MRI.

Our department provides advanced neuro MRI, including MR spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging, functional MRI, vessel wall Imaging and MR perfusion scan, together with the adoption of RapidAI software. We can contribute information for neurologists to determine the patient’s eligibility for endovascular therapy (intra-arterial thrombectomy/IA thrombectomy) and provide more treatment options to patients who might have missed the golden 3-hour window after stroke onset.

Apart from anatomical images, we can provide quantitative measurements of liver stiffness and fat fraction. This additional input will help the gastroenterologist assess the status of liver cirrhosis and triglyceride fat content. Since 2019, we have been working with the University of Hong Kong to conduct research on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and fatty liver.

We are also the pioneer of MR guided breast biopsies and have been providing interventional breast procedures since 2014.
