Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tear

Cause

The ACL may be twisted and torn apart when i) the back of your lower leg is hit, ii) your knee joint is extremely stretched or iii) your knee comes to a sudden stop or is twisted. The tendons behind and lateral to the knee may be injured if you are severely hit.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Pain and swelling in the joint in a small tear. You may hear a “puff” if the ACL is completely torn, resulting in an acutely painful, swelling or creaky-feeling joint.

Procedures and Treatments

Arthroscopic tendon replacement surgery.
