Cause
Ageing and degenerative changes in the tendon can be accelerated by repetitive or excessive arm motion. Unaccustomed sports activities may exacerbate symptoms.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Pain in the shoulder, with movement limited by pain. If a complete tear of the rotator cuff tendon occurs, weakness in raising the arm may be felt.
Procedures and Treatments
Rest, anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy. If symptoms persist, injections of anti-inflammatory drugs directly into the shoulder may be required. Persistent symptoms may require surgery to flatten and smoothen the acromion and to repair any tears in the rotator cuff tendon.
