Clinical Genetics Service
Our team of genetic specialists can give you insights on hereditary conditions to watch for
At Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, we offer a cutting-edge clinical genetics service that plays a critical role in the early detection and prevention of hereditary diseases and gives patients the knowledge and tools to manage their health proactively.
HKSH is the first hospital in Hong Kong to introduce a clinical genetics service in the local private sector. Our team of clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors offers a wide range of comprehensive services, including assessment, diagnosis and counselling for individuals and their families.
Since 2016, we have been helping patients and their families gain deep insights into hereditary diseases and associated risks with professional support and guidance. Our pioneering services cover neonatal and paediatric diseases, prenatal and reproductive conditions, and adult genetic disorders. In addition to professional genetic counselling, our team provides diverse genetic testing options, giving individuals and their families a thorough understanding of their overall genetic health.
Services
Our clinical geneticists will guide and educate patients and their family members on an appropriate diagnostic workup through genetic assessment and counselling. Those in need of additional support can receive guidance from our genetic counsellors.
HKSH has an advanced genetic laboratory that supports a wide range of first-rate genetic screenings and tests. Our team also works with their colleagues at our IVF Centre and associated units to deliver exceptional care to patients in need.
Genetic counsellors are healthcare professionals with specialised education and training in medical genetics and counselling. They assess an individual's or family's medical history to evaluate the risk of inherited genetic conditions or birth defects. In addition to educating patients and their families about various genetic conditions and available testing options, genetic counsellors provide guidance on interpreting genetic test results. They play a crucial role in helping patients and their families understand and adapt to the psychological, reproductive, familial and medical implications of their genetic information.
A clinical geneticist is a medical practitioner who has completed additional specialised training in medical genetics and is qualified to diagnose and treat genetic conditions.
A genetic counsellor has a master's degree in genetic counselling and has trained in medical genetics and counselling to provide genetic counselling services.
