Anaesthesia Management During Cataract Surgery

Topical Anaesthesia
Topical anaesthesia is the most commonly used type of pain management in cataract surgery. Anaesthetic eye drops are applied to prevent the patient from feeling any pain during the surgery. he patient is still able to move their body and may feel only mild pressure in the eye.. In general, no special preparation is needed for patients choosing this method, other than avoiding food for 4 hours prior to the surgery.

Local Anaesthesia
In addition to anaesthetic eye drops, a local anaesthetic is injected into the peri-orbital area. Patients will not feel any pain during the surgery, and their muscles will be more relaxed. In general, no special preparation is needed for patients choosing this method, other than avoiding food for 4 hours prior to the surgery.

Monitored Anaesthesia Care ( MAC)
This type of pain management can only be administered by anaesthetists in Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. The anaesthetic dosage is lower than that of general anaesthesia, but enough to make a patient fall asleep. The patient's cardiopulmonary functions are monitored by the anaesthesiologists throughout the surgery. This pain management can be considered if patients find it difficult to relax or have physical conditions that require close monitoring of their cardiopulmonary functions. In general, no special preparation is needed, other than avoiding food for 6 to 8 hours prior to the surgery.

General Anaesthesia
This type of pain management can only be administered by anaesthetists in Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital. The anaesthetic dosage is enough to make a patient lose consciousness and feel no pain. The patient may be connected to a respirator that aids breathing. The patient's cardiopulmonary functions are monitored by the anaesthesiologists throughout the surgery. In general, no special preparation is needed, other than avoiding food for 6 to 8 hours prior to the surgery.
