Eye Surgery
Our highly skilled eye care specialists are here to protect and restore your vision
The Eye Surgery Centre was established at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital in Happy Valley as the Cataract Surgery Centre in 2003. As its service scope continued to expand, the Centre was upgraded in 2012, expanding from two to three operating rooms, and renamed as the Eye Surgery Centre to reflect its full service scope in diagnosing and treating eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular conditions and retinal diseases.
In 2020, HKSH’s eye surgery services were further expanded with the opening of another day procedure centre in Admiralty. Located at the HKSH Healthcare Medical Centre in Pacific Place, the Eye Surgery Centre in Admiralty has over 30,000 sq. ft. of clinical space and two operating rooms dedicated to the eye care needs of our patients in a truly one-stop easily accessible location.
The Eye Surgery Centre is staffed by highly competent ophthalmologists, anaesthesiologists, experienced nurses and allied health professionals from HKSH. All surgeries are performed by the ophthalmologists of HKSH’s Department of Ophthalmology, ranging from cataract surgery to other eye-related procedures for anti-glaucoma, posterior vitrectomy, retinal detachment, cornea transplant, squint and eyelid surgery.
Eye-related procedures and surgeries are carried out in a safe and ambulatory environment, thanks to the Centre’s state-of-the-art facilities. Operating rooms are run in full compliance with stringent infection control standards for the comfort and safety of our patients. In addition, both Eye Surgery Centres in Happy Valley and Admiralty feature high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, unidirectional air flow with positive pressure setting, and strict monitoring of temperature and humidity.
Several pain management options, such as General Anaesthesia and Monitored Anaesthesia Care (in the hospital-setting only), are performed by anaesthesiologists during surgery. There are also different types of implanted lens for patients to choose from. Other than traditional monofocal lenses, these include toric lens, multifocal lens and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lens for treating cataract and correcting presbyopia and refractive errors.
