Paediatric Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy harnesses the body’s own immune system to fight cancer with high precision. It functions by strengthening or reprogramming immune defences to recognise and destroy cancer cells while sparing the healthy ones. Examples include monoclonal antibodies (e.g. rituximab that binds to cancer cell markers of B-cell lymphomas), cytokine therapy (e.g. boosting immunity with immune-signalling molecules called interleukins), and CAR T-cell therapy, sometimes used alongside chemotherapy or targeted therapy for better outcomes. Monitoring is crucial to manage immune-related side effects.

In CAR T-cell therapy, one’s T-cells are genetically engineered to target specific cancer cells. It is highly effective in treating relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
