Lumbar Puncture/Intrathecal
A lumbar puncture is most commonly performed to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in case of suspected central nervous system involvement by malignant cells. Intrathecal chemotherapy is infusing chemotherapy into CSF via the spinal needle in patients with leukaemia or lymphoma. A small spinal needle is inserted through the lower back into the spinal canal to collect a sample of CSF which is then sent to a pathology laboratory for testing. Upon the request of the referring doctor, a manometer is sometimes connected to measure the CSF pressure. The procedure is performed by a doctor.
Bone Marrow Examination
Bone marrow examination refers to the analysis of samples from bone marrow obtained by bone marrow aspiration with or without bone marrow biopsy (often called “trephine biopsy”). Bone marrow examination is used in the diagnosis of a number of conditions, including leukaemia, solid tumours, anaemia, and pancytopenia. The bone marrow produces the cellular elements of the blood, including platelets, red blood cells and white blood cells. While much information can be gleaned by testing the blood itself (drawn from a vein by phlebotomy), it is sometimes necessary to examine the source of the blood cells in the bone marrow to obtain more information on haematopoiesis; this is the role of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
