Cause
Intervertebral disc herniation is the most common degenerative disease. Located between the vertebrae, the intervertebral discs are made of an elastic material, making it ideal for supporting the body weight and withstanding external impacts. Repeated or excessive impact on the spine can damage the intervertebral discs, causing them to protrude. Middle-aged people are particularly vulnerable to this condition during high-impact contact sports, especially when the lumbar spine is subjected to heavy loads. Intervertebral disc herniation is also common in the cervical spine.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
The protruded lumbar intervertebral disc might press against nearby nerves, resulting in a painful limp and numbness, or even weakness, in the legs, creating functional problems. It is a common cause of sciatica.
Procedures and Treatments
Mild cases are relieved with physiotherapy; surgery may be necessary in severe cases.
