Cause
The gastrocnemius muscle is a major muscle located in the back of the lower leg. Without adequate warm-up, your calf muscle may lose flexibility and thus fail to support stretching movements. The muscle may be injured during a short sprint or quick leaps, e.g. when tennis players make a high jump to hit the ball.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
You may feel a sudden tear or hear a crack; it can feel like something has hit you. You may feel weak or an aching sensation in your calf.
Procedures and Treatments
Tearing is common in most cases. In mild cases, resting and applying ice to the injured area can help; in serious cases, surgery may be necessary.
