Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy / OGD)

Why It’s Done (Indications)

Used to inspect the lining of your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine. It helps investigate persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or anemia.

How to Prepare (Preparations)

  • Medications: Inform your doctor about any blood thinners or diabetes medications, as they may need temporary adjustment.
  • Fasting: No solid food or drink (except small sips of water) for 6 hours before the procedure to ensure your stomach is completely empty.

What Happens (Procedural Details)

  1. A local anesthetic spray is applied to numb the back of your throat to prevent gagging, and medications are given through an IV to put you to sleep.
  2. A flexible, thin tube with a tiny camera and light (endoscope) is gently guided down your throat into your stomach.
  3. Air is pumped in to expand the stomach walls for clear viewing.
  4. The doctor inspects the tissue, takes tiny biopsy samples if necessary, or treats minor bleeding points before gently withdrawing the tube.

Recovery (Postoperative Care)

  • You will rest in a recovery area until the sedative wears off (about 30 to 60 minutes).
  • Avoid eating or drinking until your throat numbness completely resolves (usually 1 hour).
  • Do not drive for 24 hours.

Risks (Potential Complications)

  • Temporary sore throat or abdominal bloating.
  • Bleeding at a biopsy site (usually minor and self-limiting).
  • Tear or puncture in the stomach or esophageal wall (perforation) — extremely rare.
